Recovering After the Holidays

January is one of my favorite months just as Mondays one of my favorite days (when I remember to set my alarm just like I didn't do this week). It's calm, fresh, and relaxing compared to the past three or four months prior. Often my November through mid-December is hectic and then I spend Christmas through New Years lounging around. By January, I'm ready to start fresh, recover, and get back in gear. Here's how I practice self-care after the holidays are over.

1. Start a new diet. After all the binge-eating of cookies and over-consumption of alcohol, I try to put a defined limit on myself. Eating more fresh foods (pomegranates are totally in season right now!) and substituting more water instead of champagne is a great way to kick-start a healthy diet for the new year.

2. Get up and move. I know it's easy to want to curl up in a ball and hide under blankets, but the easiest way to warm up is movement! I try to take the stairs at work when I can, and just get up throughout the day and walk around.

3. Organize. Nothing feels more refreshing than to de-clutter your house/apartment. Now is the time to go through all your packed away seasonal clothes and donate what you haven't worn.

4. Stretch. I do yoga every Tuesday and that honestly still isn't enough stretching for my body. Feeling more limber, releasing tension, and improving your posture will feel amazing for your body.

5. Take some time to disconnect. Is it just me or do I spend an inane amount of time over the holidays glued to the television. We're always connected to many types of electronics at all times, so take some time to disconnect from tv, phone, etc and entertain yourself with something that's not electronic. I've pledged to read 35 books this year and I'm trying to read every night instead of plugging in and watching the bachelor. Whatever hobby works for your, go for it.

How to you practice self-care after the holidays?

My Summertime Health Goals

So the last week I went to the doctor. Had the typical blood pressure taken, got weighted, temperature taken, the usual. Anyways, once I look at all my results it says I'm pre-hypertensive! I was shocked. I'm in my twenties, eat fairly healthy, I exercise, and I'm close to having high blood pressure?!

This revelation has kicked my butt into gear and I've decided that I need to make some goals to keep me on track this summer.

Get 10,000 steps every day.

I typically get like 8,000 a day or 9,000. So I need to make sure that I look at the end of the day and go for an evening walk with Starla to get my few thousand steps to make it. Also, be my friend on Fitbit!

Drink three bottles (~60 oz) of water a day.

I'm pretty good with this when I'm sitting at my desk all day at work but I am awful at it on my telework days or weekends.

WORK OUT THREE TIMES A WEEK.

I apologize for the all caps, but I really need to yell at myself for this one. I say every week that I go to the gym three days a week and I'm lucky if I make it twice. I will however count outside runs with Starla as one gym trip, but I really need to start lifting. I can barely lift my carry-on into the overhead storage. That's a problem for someone who travels as much as I do.

Snack healthy.

Stop eating potato chips and pistachios for snacks and grab a mango or an apple instead. Pretty straight forward.

Limit my wine habits.

So I may or may not enjoy about two glasses a wine every other evening. Or every evening, I don't know, who's counting anyways? So I should really limit it to only one glass of wine a night and probably not every night either. I'm also going to tell myself no wine on nights that I've worked out. A work out does not equate to an allowance of one extra glass. I'll just cry silently and pout in the corner about this one.

These sound like enough for now. I promise I will check in with you next week about how this went. Can someone please yell at me if I don't check-in?

Do you have any health goals for this summer (or forever, I guess...)?

EFT For Self Love and Body Confidence

Hi readers! Hope you're enjoying all the guest posts! Today I have Kate from My Spiritual Roadtrip sharing some self-love and body confidence tips! Seriously, they're great.

Tapping for Self Love and Body Confidence

Hey Everyone! I'm so excited to be here on Alanna & Company. Today, I’m talking about a subject that most of us are all too familiar with: issues around self love, body confidence, and weight loss. However, I’m addressing it from a slightly different perspective than you might normally hear about. As an Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) practitioner, I look at the effect that stress has on our body and on every aspect of our lives. It’s my belief that while proper nutrition and exercise play an important role in keeping you healthy and happy, true self love, body confidence, and healthy weight loss (or healthy weight gain) can only be achieved if we clear away the stress and limiting beliefs that many of us are holding onto.

Before we go deeper into that, let me give a quick run down on what EFT is all about. EFT, also known as Tapping, is a hands on technique that allows you to release limiting and negative beliefs that you are holding onto and to turn off the stress response, which for many of us is activated almost constantly due to the society that we live in.

By tapping on different acupressure points on our body and tuning into the negative/stressful/anxious feelings that we are experiencing, we are actually able to clear away these emotions and send a message to the amygdala in the brain, which controls fight or flight, telling it that it can turn off the stress response and return to a natural state of peace (often referred to as Rest and Digest- the opposite of Fight/Flight). If you’d like to know more about EFT and how both my clients and I have benefited from this powerful process, you can check out this video.

So how does this relate to self-love, body confidence, and weight? Oh, it’s everything.

We live in an appearance-obsessed society, and looking the “right way” is given crazy high importance. We’re also wired to want to be fit and healthy because it both extends and improves the quality of our lives! So looking and feeling the right way is heavily emphasized, and this often leads to a lot of stress.

Most of us are all too familiar with that panicky feeling we get when we think we’ve gained a few pounds or when we compare ourselves to a “perfect body.” This is fight/flight kicking into action. You see, our well-meaning brains cannot differentiate between a real threat (ex. Being chased by a hungry animal) and a perceived threat (ex. not fitting into our dress the way we want to). Both events activate the stress response, and this can pose a major barrier to loving your body and losing weight.

How does the stress response affect your body confidence and weight?
+Stress hormones can actually make your body hold onto weight.
+Leads to emotional and overeating in an attempt to calm and soothe ourselves
+Similarly, causes us to crave comfort foods and sabotage healthy eating practices.
+Keeps us in panic mode, which leads to overreacting to minor events (ex. gaining weight thinking about wearing a bikini).
+Makes true relaxation impossible.

Eating healthy food and exercising are great, but they are only fully beneficial if we are doing them from a place of calm and happiness. If we are forcing ourselves into restrictive diets and punishing workouts that don’t feel good and nurturing to our bodies, we are actually activating the stress response because our body feels like it is under attack! It is often the people who implements strict diet and exercise rules who are the first to sneak or binge on “bad” foods. In fact, the very act of thinking of foods as “good” and “bad” triggers the stress response.

You know those people who look so comfortable and at home in their bodies and have no trouble maintain their ideal weight? They generally do not have any stress or negative associations around food. They respect their body, they eat when they’re hungry, and they stop when they’re full. They exercise because it feels good, not because they are trying to shed weight.

When I use EFT with my clients for issues around body confidence and weight loss, we look at the emotions that come up when they think about their body/weight/food/exercise/sexuality (yup that’s an important one- it’s difficult to feel really sexy when you’re judging your body), and more. By tapping on and clearing these issues, we can release our drive to over eat, stress about our bodies, and judge and punish ourselves. We also clear the stress hormones, which lead to weight gain, like adrenaline and cortisol, out of our bodies.

We generally operate under the false premise that stress will actually help us lose weight. We think of it as healthy motivation, and tell ourselves that if we just “give up” and accept our bodies, we’ll never have the bodies we want. The internet is full of Fitspo quotes encouraging us to suffer for the perfect body (“No pain no gain,” “It won’t be easy, but it’ll be worth it.”)

"and then the day comes when the risk to remain tight in a bud becomes more painful than the risk it took to blossom." - Elizabeth Appell
"and then the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud became more painful than the risk it took to blossom." - Elizabeth Appell

Nothing could be further than the truth. When we relax and begin to enjoy our bodies and love and honour them for the amazing beings they really are (at any weight, shape, and size!), we begin to naturally come into balance. Sugar cravings fade away, exercise and movement become fun, and we begin to experience the simple joy of being in our body. And we start to realize that it was never really about the weight anyway. It was about loving ourselves. I will never say that EFT if the ticket to body confidence and weight loss, and please don’t listen to anyone who tells you that their way is the only way. There are many paths to peace and self love (i.e. the basis of body confidence, a healthy weight, and basically everything)- EFT just happens to be one that works really well for me. For me it’s also walking, journaling, making tea, practicing presence, spending time with people I love, and saying nice things to myself! It’s simple things like brushing my hair, making facemasks, and doing my make up from a place of taking care of and decorating my body. And breathing- nothing beats a few deep breaths. If you would like to learn more about the effects of stress on weight loss and body love, I highly recommend two books: Tapping for Weight Loss & Body Confidence and Pleasurable Weight Loss. And if you are interested in chatting with me more about EFT, please send me an email at katehorodyski@hotmail.com.

Loving yourself and your body is your birthright! Don’t settle for anything less.

 Kate xoxo

Oh, How I Love Group Fitness Classes

In contrast to the photo above, I actually hate running. My boyfriend dragged me to a handful of 5k's this summer and I ended up feeling dead after the summer with a serious shin splint in my left leg.

I'm also terrible at motivating myself. I listen to that devil on my shoulder that says, "You're ten minutes away from a full half-hour, let's just leave now." or "I'm cramping and there's absolutely no way to push through this." or "I want pizza right now." However, I love when people motivate me. One of my favorite things, and the only reason I pay for a gym membership, are the group fitness classes. In addition, getting fit and going to the gym at least three times a week is one of my resolutions. I successfully completed the resolution last week but definitely won't complete this week due to a work trip :(

Like I said previously, the main reason I go to a gym are the group fitness classes. I absolutely love them. I typically go to a range of a few different classes like Zumba, Body Pump, Cycle (aka Spinning, click the link to get to Sarah, my instructor's, blog!), Boot Camp, Body Jam (recently has been replaced by Zumba), Insanity, and sometimes Pilates. Overall Zumba, Cycle, and Body Pump are my three favorites. Zumba gets your cardio really going! For a sixty-minute class I typically burn around 600-700 calories depending on the dance routine that my instructor takes us through. I also am learning how to have better rhythm which is always a plus. Body Pump by Les Mills looks extremely intimidating. It took me forever to go to the class because everyone rushes to pick up at least 10 items to workout with, but almost every instructor I've had has been super helpful and will help you set up and tell you which weights you should use. It's addicting once you start. See below for a sneak peek.

I know there are a lot of people who get self-conscious at group classes or would prefer to work at their own pace, but for me they are perfect. I like group fitness classes for a number of reasons:

  1. Group motivation and camaraderie.
  2. The instructor pushes you.
  3. They keep you on a regular schedule.
  4. You learn new exercise routines.
  5. The instructor teaches you proper posture and technique.
  6. Give you ample time to warm-up and stretch (a downfall in my individual workout routine.)
  7. You can be social and make friends!

Sorry for such a wordy post!

Do you prefer to workout in group classes, with a partner, or by yourself? What motivates you?
